Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scan

Our clinics provide pregnancy imaging using safe, high-resolution ultrasound technology to monitor the health and development of your baby throughout your pregnancy.

Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scan

Queensland Radiology Specialists offers Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scans to screen for certain chromosomal conditions in early pregnancy. Performed by experienced sonographers using high-resolution ultrasound, this scan provides important information about the risk of conditions such as Down syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18), and Patau syndrome (trisomy 13).

Availability: NT scans are available at all of our clinic locations.

What Is a Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scan?

A Nuchal Translucency Scan is a specialised ultrasound performed in the first trimester to measure the clear space (translucency) at the back of the baby’s neck.

This scan is usually combined with a first-trimester blood test to calculate the baby’s overall risk of chromosomal abnormalities.

Key purposes of the NT scan include:

  • Measuring the nuchal translucency to assess chromosomal risk

  • Confirming gestational age and fetal viability

  • Checking for early signs of congenital heart or structural conditions

  • Providing information for your obstetrician to plan ongoing care

We recommend having the NT scan as close to 13 weeks gestation as possible for the most accurate assessment.

  • The sonographer will measure the nuchal translucency and other markers

  • The scan is painless and non-invasive

  • The procedure usually takes 20–30 minutes

After the Scan

  • You can return to normal activities immediately

  • The sonographer will review images and a report will be sent to your referring doctor

Is a Nuchal Translucency Scan Safe?

NT scans are safe and non-invasive, using ultrasound instead of radiation. These scans are suitable for all patients in the first trimester and can be combined with blood tests for more comprehensive risk assessment.
