CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA)

Advanced Cardiac Imaging for Early Detection of Coronary Artery Disease

CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA)

Our clinics provide specialised CT Coronary Angiography (CTCA) to assess the coronary arteries for narrowing, plaque build-up, or blockages.

This non-invasive scan delivers highly detailed images of the heart and coronary vessels, helping diagnose coronary artery disease early and accurately.

CTCA is a fast, modern alternative to invasive coronary angiography for many patients and plays a key role in evaluating chest pain and cardiac risk.

Availability: CT Coronary Angiography is available at our Springwood and Chermside clinics. Our team will confirm the most appropriate site when booking.

What Is a CT Coronary Angiogram?

A CT Coronary Angiogram is a specialised heart scan performed using advanced CT technology and intravenous contrast.

It produces high-resolution 3D images of the coronary arteries, allowing our radiologists to assess:

  • Coronary artery narrowing or blockages

  • Atherosclerotic plaque

  • Congenital coronary abnormalities

  • Cardiac anatomy

CTCA is commonly referred for patients experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, or those with cardiovascular risk factors.

Who May Benefit from a CTCA?

Your GP or specialist may refer you for a CT Coronary Angiogram if you have:

  • Chest pain of uncertain cause

  • Intermediate risk of coronary artery disease

  • Abnormal stress test results

  • Strong family history of heart disease

  • Cardiovascular risk factors (diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, hypertension)

CTCA is often used to rule out significant coronary artery disease in low to intermediate-risk patients.

What to Expect During Your CT Coronary Angiogram

Before Your Scan

You may be asked to:

  • Avoid caffeine for 12–24 hours prior

  • Fast for several hours before the scan

  • Take prescribed heart rate medication (if required)

A small cannula will be inserted for contrast administration.
Please inform staff of:

  • Kidney problems

  • Contrast allergies

  • Asthma

  • Pregnancy

During the Scan

  • You will lie on a CT scanning table

  • ECG leads will be placed on your chest to monitor your heartbeat

  • Contrast dye will be injected through the cannula

  • You may feel a brief warm sensation

  • The scan itself takes only a few seconds, though the full appointment may take 30–60 minutes

The procedure is non-invasive and painless.

After the Scan

  • Most patients can return to normal activities shortly after

  • You may be observed briefly following contrast injection

Is a CT Coronary Angiogram Safe?

CTCA uses radiation; however, modern scanners and cardiac-specific low-dose protocols significantly minimise exposure.

All examinations are clinically justified and performed under strict radiation safety standards.

If contrast is required, kidney function and allergy history are carefully reviewed prior to the scan.

CT Scan Costs & Billing

Are CTCA Scans Bulk Billed?

CT Coronary Angiograms referred by Cardiologists are Bulk Billed.

Our team will always advise you of any costs prior to your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions About CT Scans

Yes. A valid referral from your GP or specialist is required.
The total appointment time is usually 30–60 minutes.
Yes. CTCA requires intravenous contrast to visualise the coronary arteries clearly.
No. A CTCA is non-invasive and does not require catheter insertion into the arteries. It is often used to assess patients before considering invasive testing.
Your scan is reviewed by a radiologist and a report is sent directly to your referring doctor. Urgent scans are prioritised.
