Mammography

Queensland Radiology Specialists provides mammography, a specialised X-ray imaging technique used to detect and assess breast conditions, including early signs of breast cancer. Performed by experienced radiographers, mammography is a safe and effective tool for breast health evaluation.

Availability: Mammography is available at our Springwood clinic only.

What Is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast that produces detailed images of breast tissue.

It is commonly used to:

  • Detect breast lumps, masses, or calcifications
  • Screen for breast cancer in asymptomatic patients
  • Investigate breast changes, pain, or nipple discharge
  • Guide further testing or biopsies

Mammography is often combined with ultrasound for a comprehensive assessment, particularly in women with dense breast tissue.

Why Choose Queensland Radiology Specialists for Mammography?

  • Experienced radiographers specialising in breast imaging
  • High-resolution digital mammography for accurate detection
  • Safe, low-dose X-ray imaging
  • Rapid report turnaround for your referring doctor
  • Supportive and professional environment

We prioritise diagnostic accuracy and patient comfort during every mammogram.

What to Expect During Your Mammogram

Before Your Scan

  • Avoid applying deodorants, powders, or lotions on your chest area
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy removal of clothing from the waist up
  • Bring your referral and any previous breast imaging reports

During the Scan

  • You will stand in front of the mammography machine
  • Each breast is positioned and gently compressed between two plates to capture detailed images
  • The procedure usually takes 10–20 minutes
  • Some mild discomfort from compression may be felt, but it is brief

After the Scan

  • You can return to normal activities immediately
  • Images are reviewed by a specialist radiologist, and a detailed report is sent to your referring doctor
  • Your doctor will discuss findings and recommend any follow-up if necessary

Is Mammography Safe?

Yes. Mammography uses low-dose X-rays and is considered safe for screening and diagnostic purposes. Compression is used to improve image quality and reduce radiation exposure.
