What Is a Cardiac MRI?

A Cardiac MRI is a non-invasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the heart and surrounding structures.

It allows radiologists and cardiologists to:

  • Evaluate heart muscle function and thickness

  • Assess heart valves and chambers

  • Detect cardiomyopathies, heart failure, or congenital heart defects

  • Measure blood flow and perfusion

  • Plan and monitor cardiac treatments

Cardiac MRI is often used when detailed information about heart structure and function is required beyond what echocardiography or CT can provide.

Why Choose Our Cardiac MRI Service?

  • Advanced MRI scanners with cardiac-specific protocols

  • Experienced cardiac radiologists

  • High-resolution, 3D heart imaging

  • Safe, non-invasive, and radiation-free

What to Expect During Your Cardiac MRI

Before Your Scan

  • Avoid caffeine prior to the scan if advised

  • Remove all metal objects (jewellery, watches, piercings)

  • Inform staff if you have pacemakers, implants, or metal fragments

  • You may be asked to fast for certain types of cardiac MRI

During the Scan

  • You will lie on the MRI table inside the scanner

  • ECG leads may be attached to monitor your heartbeat

  • You will hear tapping noises from the MRI machine; ear protection is provided

  • Breathing instructions may be given to capture clear images

  • The scan usually takes 30–60 minutes

The procedure is painless, though some patients may feel mild discomfort from lying still.

After the Scan

  • Most patients can resume normal activities immediately

  • Images are reviewed by a specialist cardiac radiologist, and a detailed report is sent to your referring doctor

  • Follow-up or further imaging recommendations will be discussed by your doctor

Is Cardiac MRI Safe?

Cardiac MRI is non-invasive and does not use X-ray radiation, making it safe for repeated imaging.

Contrast agents may be used in some scans to enhance image quality; your kidney function and allergy history will be reviewed beforehand.
