Lung Screening – NLCSP

Our clinics provide low-dose CT scans as part of the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) to detect lung cancer early, when treatment is most effective.

Lung screening is recommended for adults at higher risk, particularly:

  • Age 50–70 years
  • Heavy current or former smokers
  • At least 30 pack-year smoking history

What Is Lung Screening?

Lung screening uses low-dose CT (LDCT) scans to detect small nodules or abnormalities in the lungs before symptoms appear.

What to Expect During Your Lung Screening

Before Your Scan

  • No fasting is required
  • Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers or buttons
  • Inform staff if you are pregnant or may be pregnant

During the Scan

  • You lie on the CT table
  • The scanner captures images of your lungs in a few minutes
  • The procedure is painless

After the Scan

  • You can resume normal activities immediately
  • Your radiologist reviews the images and sends a report to your GP or specialist
  • Abnormal findings are followed up according to NLCSP guidelines

Lung Screening Costs & Billing

  • Eligible NLCSP patients: Bulk billed under the National Lung Cancer Screening Program.
  • Not eligible for NLCSP: A standard CT Chest scan is still bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid GP or specialist referral.
  • Contact your nearest clinic with your referral to confirm eligibility and any fees for additional investigations.

How long does the scan take?
Most low-dose CT lung scans take 5–10 minutes.
Am I eligible for NLCSP?
Eligibility is based on age (55–74) and smoking history (≥30 pack-years). Your GP can assess your eligibility.
How long until I get results?
Your radiologist reviews the images and sends a report to your GP. Follow-up depends on NLCSP guidelines.
What happens if something abnormal is found?
Your GP will discuss next steps, which may include further imaging or referral to a specialist.
